Coalition for New Philanthropy

Created with leadership support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Coalition for New Philanthropy sought to take best practices developed by pooled funds and philanthropic advisors serving communities of color and make these resources available to other professionals and philanthropists.

Philanthropy New York (then known as NYRAG) and our partners, the Asian American Federation of New York, the Hispanic Federation, the Twenty-First Century Foundation, the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society of the City University of New York, developed materials to fulfill the following goals:

  • to empower African-American, Latino and Asian American donors to increase the effectiveness and impact of their individual and collective philanthropic resources;
  • to create permanent resources in and for African-American, Latino and Asian American communities;
  • to educate professional advisors and Coalition members to meet the needs of these donors;
  • to strengthen the ability of Coalition members to promote philanthropy in these three ethnic communities; and
  • to increase understanding of donor intent and motivation in communities of color.

While the Coalition formally ended in 2007 after seven very active years, the resources we provide on this site address the opportunities and challenges that racial, ethnic, and tribal funds, foundations, and grantmaking federations encounter in building their capacity and sustaining their work, especially with collaborative efforts.

We hope these resources will encourage more individuals to commit themselves to sustained, strategic philanthropy. Please contact Philanthropy New York or any Coalition partners to connect with other tools for growing your philanthropy or that of your clients.
