Diversity in Philanthropy Initiatives

Philanthropy New York has a long history of supporting programs that seek to increase diversity in our sector and beyond; we describe several of these projects, past and present, below.

We are especially proud of the variety of approaches our work has taken. We have addressed issues of diversity by:

  • forging coalitions with others in the philanthropic sector;
  • undertaking broad-based research;
  • bringing young professionals of color into the field; and
  • creating a standing board committee on diversity to ensure the organization's proactive engagement with this issue.

    Philanthropy New York has partnered with The Foundation Center and the Diversity in Philanthropy Project on an initiative to examine issues of diversity in the grantmaking and governance of New York foundations and nonprofit organizations. The Project’s first research report, Benchmarking Diversity: A First Look at New York City Foundations and Nonprofits, is now available.

The Coalition was established by the Asian American Federation of New York, the Hispanic Federation, the Twenty-First Century Foundation, the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society of the City University of New York, and Philanthropy New York (then known as NYRAG).

  • D5 Request for Proposals: Organization to Serve as Program Office
    The D5 initiative—a coalition of foundations and philanthropic organizations embarking on a five-year plan to galvanize philanthropy's work on diversity, equity, and inclusion—is an intensive, timelimited effort to increase diversity in the sector through the coordinated activities of its core infrastructure groups. D5 seeks an organization to serve as the program office and home for its coalition management structure.
